Kevin Thompson tops WoO/LM field at West Fargo (By Gary L. Nelson)
West Fargo, N.D. – Kevin Thompson’s qualifying time Thursday, June 8 for the World of Outlaws late model series at Red River Speedway, was just over one-half second slower than Billy Moyer of Batesville, Ark.
That should have told the competition something. Moyer has been tough to beat in the WoO/ALMA series throughout the country.
The Grand Forks, N.D. driver went on to lead the 30-lap feature flag to flag for the $4,000 win.
He had plenty of competition behind him as Mitch Johnson of Fargo, second fastest qualifier in his special outlaw car, nudged Thompson’s left rear panel coming around the third and fourth turns of the last lap.
Johnson said he wanted to win the race and hoped the tap would give him the edge he needed to win.
“There was a lot of dollars difference between first and second place,” said Johnson. His strategy didn’t work as Thompson stayed in line for the win. Johnson’s right front was damaged and he went to the wall. He came out of it for a fourth place finish.
“Oh well, they still paid at least $1,000 for 10th place,” Johnson said as he and the crew fixed the car after the feature.
Thompson, meanwhile, was basking in the glory of winning the big event and the big paycheck.
“We used pretty much the usual setup for the car,” Thompson said. “The track was good and tacky.”
His last major win in a big late model race was the Winnipeg Speedway Players 100 last fall.
He joined the five-day WoO/ALMA series in Fargo, the third night of the series which began June 4 at Impact Speedway near Madison, Wisc. Moyer won that race.
The second night was at Shawano Speedway in Shawano, Wisc. Rich Egersdorf of St. Paul won that race.
The $150,000 series was put on by Gary, Bob and Ted Cook, owners of Cedar Lake Speedway at Somerset, Wisc. The tour moved to Superior, Wisc. Friday and concluded at Cedar Lake Saturday, June 10.
